Marriage Story (movie review)
By: Naufal Ubaidillah
I watched this movie in a village. So it was kind of romantic. And I was really immersed in the characters of this movie. I really like Nicole, who was casted by Scarlett Johansson, this time with a short hair, because she was a great presence throughout the movie. Her gaze, her movement, her every voice was spot on. I also do like Charlie. He was more stiff, less dynamic. But he also has “his” kind of something. His passion for theater is really affecting the emotion of anyone who watches this movie. And finally, the innocent Henry, their child. He was their mutual life goal. As drsuejohnson.com put it, “Marriage Story shows how the sinews of a relationship remain, as the bones –the emotional connection that provides the real structure – melt away. This couple have a shared life, with a child and a mutual passion for theatre, but ultimately what they have not taken care of is their emotional connection.”
So
I kind of agree with the last phrase, “emotional connection”. What is an
emotional connection? Do you consider yourself as having any “emotional
connection” with the nearest ant that is maybe currently walking under your
bed? Or take for example, the time when you maybe went to the zoo and saw how
amazing the “emotional connection” between the dolphin and the human trainer
is.
Ultimately,
for me, emotional connection is not something you build only by using words.
No. It is a colossal bond that need one main component: sincerity. Even if the
bond doesn’t use words, if sincerity is present, then the connection will be as
strong as ever. It will work. Just as the dolphin with its human trainer.
