Dolemite is My Name (movie review)
Ah... this is really such a good time to talk about the memories of watching this movie. A man, already in his adult years, starts his career as a cultural star. First, he records and collects his stand-up comedy show in a voice file with his own recording system. Even he himself designed the album cover photography. Slowly, he starts to get famous. At first, it was only the dark-colored people who enjoys his comedy album. But later, the light-skinned people start to also love it.
One day, Ray Moore (the man), or more famous as
Dolemite, decides that he’s going to make his own movie.
He carries himself to the best people that he thinks
will be suitable to become the Writer, Director, and Actor/Actresses of his
Dolemite movie. So, a movie inside a movie. Not quite like an apple inside an
apple, but still.
Apparently, he succeeds in persuading some of the big
names he chases to become the Writer, Director, and Actor/Actresses.
Now, he only needs a filming company who wants to
produce his movie. He applies everywhere, but the only answers he gets is a
“no”.
So, again, as authentic as always, he decides to make
his own movie production company. He hires some young people who are the
experts of filming.
He delivers the movie quite spectacularly. He makes his
team connect with each other. And, in the night of the gala premiere, he and
some of the biggest people of his movie is inside a limousin, on the way to the
gala premiere.
Dolemite weathers the storm of doubt aired by his
friends about the possibility of low turnout in the gala premiere by telling
them just how far they have come to make their own movie, how it is already a
success no matter what happens in the gala premiere.
But, to their surprises, the gala premiere is packed
with so so many people hysterically waiting for the stars of the so-called
Dolemite movie.
They all smile and it was a night to remember for them
surely.
I store this beautiful memory of having seen this movie
as a kind of mental warranty for myself. For, one day, I may need to be reminded
of the existence of this movie.
