Right now, I am quite grieving over
Grace Shelby’s death. She was Thomas Shelby’s wife and true love. She left
their son Charles behind. So, it’s now just Tommy and Charlie. They went away
to Wales to maybe get some air.
Anyway, I don’t want to talk about
Tommy’s happiness or unhappiness. I want to talk about legitimate and
illegitimate business status of the Peaky Blinders. They started out as a
criminal gang, if I remember correctly. Then, slowly but surely, after Thomas
took control of the leadership, they started to move toward legal business.
It’s quite weird, but I suppose that was because of the hardship they were
facing in Birmingham. Maybe, it really wasn’t possible to start a totally
legitimate business at the start because of the economical situation around
Birmingham those days.
But the decision taken by Thomas to
move toward legitimate business is an admirable one. Even though he’s a
criminal at heart, he is a gentleman. He never violates women’s and children’s
rights to be treated properly. He does bad things, but he also keeps his family
and country’s honor. He won two medals for gallantry. He fought in France for his
country.
I’ve been thinking, what would
happen if Thomas had travelled more? Say, he travels to Paris, Shanghai, or at
least New York. Everything would change for him and the Peaky Blinders! He
would be an even more decorated man. He would find opportunities to do
legitimate business fully, in no time.
But then, the series would have a
less strong appeal, wouldn’t it? People seem to like crime series more than the
“nice-guys-do-nice-and-clean-business” series. Why is that? Is it because of
the human soul who secretly desires to love crimes? Is there some kind of
hormones that makes humans love crimes or at least crime series even when
common sense and basic manner tell them not to do that?
